Every day, people use water for drinking, agriculture, industry, recreation, hygiene, sanitation, and health care. Water resources are precious and finite. Warming temperatures and other natural and human-made stressors threaten to impact the quantity and quality of our water on a large scale. World Water Day highlights the essential role water plays in our lives and how we can better protect it.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

This year, Colorectal Cancer Canada (“CCC”) is highlighting the importance of screening with their various activities and the launch of the “#EveryBum” campaign: Colorectal cancer affects everyone and #EveryBum. Get Screened.
 
Their objective is to make all Canadians aware that colorectal cancer is Preventable, Treatable, and Beatable, and, if caught in its early stages, it is 90% curable. As colorectal cancer is not just an old person’s disease, all Canadians should be more aware of the signs and symptoms as well as what to do if they arise. Getting screened regularly is key!

Ultrasound Guided Interventional Pain Management

We are proud to announce that Dr. Blackburn is now providing Ultrasound Guided Interventional Pain Management. He is offering joint cortisone and viscosupplement injections under ultrasound guidance.
If you are struggling with joint or musculoskeletal pain, chat to your family physician about a referral to Dr. Blackburn for an injection.
Previously, many patients requiring joint injections have had to travel out of town for these procedures. We are delighted to be able to expand medical services in the Drumheller community.

Viruses vs Bacteria

Viruses and bacteria have different cell structures and a different way of surviving.
Bacteria are one-celled organisms that live in your body (and only 1% of them cause disease).
A virus is much smaller. It hijacks your body, invades healthy cells and uses them to multiply. Eventually, the virus kills those cells, which is what makes you sick.
Viruses are surrounded by a protective protein coating; they don’t have cell walls that can be attacked by antibiotics like bacteria does. It is because of this that antibiotics don’t work on viruses.
There are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold alone.
Typically, doctors let your body’s immune system deal with the virus and recommend medicines that can alleviate symptoms.
Research suggest:
Getting enough sleep
Eating a healthy balanced diet
Regular exercise
Wash your hands frequently
If you are sick stay home to reduce the spread to others
