Did you know about half of those with mental health issues begin dealing with them at age 15?
It’s never too soon to start having caring, connected conversations with children and youth about mental health, which can have a lasting impact as they grow.
Connect with your family doctor to learn more about resources available in your area and find more information about talking to children and youth at:

Take a Stretch Break

Stop what you’re doing and take a stretch break!
Do you work at a desk all day? Remaining in the same position for eight or more hours a day creates muscle tension and can contribute to long-term health issues.
Taking stretch breaks at work can help you:
✅ improve your flexibility, leaving your muscles feeling less tense
✅ increase your productivity and a feeling of calm
✅ improve your posture, which reduces back pain
✅ reduces fatigue, by increasing blood supply to your muscles

It’s Mental Health Week

Mental Health Week is organized by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). The campaign aims to educate and shift attitudes and perceptions about mental health. 🧠

This year’s theme is ‘My Story’ – collectively and individually, we have multiple layers and stories that make us who we are. While each year one in five Canadians experience a mental illness or mental health issue, all of us have a state of mental health.

Sharing stories and experiences with each other, especially of difficult times and challenges, can benefit a person’s mental health and help others feel like they are not alone.

If you are looking for someone to talk to, a great place to begin with is your family doctor. They can help connect you with mental health professionals, programs and workshops offered by Big Country Primary Care Network

Spring or Seasonal Allergies

Do you experience spring or seasonal allergies? 🤧

As the snow melts, common air contaminants like pollen, grass and mold can stir up allergens. Watch out for common symptoms like watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, runny or stuffy nose, post-nasal drip, sore throat and headache and fatigue.

Manage and treat your spring allergies with these tips:

🏡 keep your house and car clean and free of dust, and ensure windows stay closed

🏔 limit the time you spend outside when pollen counts are high (midday and afternoon)

👕 change your clothes after you work or play outside

🚿 use a vaporizer or humidifier in the bedroom and take hot showers to help clear a stuffy nose

💧 stay hydrated – extra fluids can help to thin the mucus in your nasal passages and encourage sinus drainage

💊 use over-the-counter allergy
medicine to help your symptoms

👨🏾‍⚕️ ask your doctor or pharmacist for suggestions to eliminate or reduce your allergy symptoms.

Eat More Fibre

We asked a PCN dietitian for the simplest thing an individual can do to improve their diet. The answer was … eat more fibre!

Fibre can help you feel full for longer, lower blood cholesterol levels and bowel regularity

Here are some easy ways to add more fibre into your diet:

🍎 adding fruit to your snacks

🥕 having more vegetables during meals

🥣 adding beans or lentils to soups
🍞 swapping white breads and pastas for whole grains (e.g., whole grain bread, whole grain cereal, whole grain roti).

Talk to your family physician or Big Country PCN health team member about creating a balanced diet that works for you. http://www.https://bigcountrypcn.com/

February 04 is #WorldCancerDay

The theme for the 2023 World Cancer Day is: Close the Care Gap
This World Cancer Day, we recognize the power of working together.

We know that every single one of us has the ability to make a difference, large or small, and that together we can make real progress in reducing the global impact of cancer.

This year, we call on you, whoever and wherever you are, to play your part in creating a cancer-free world.

This World Cancer Day, what will you do to close the gap in cancer care?

Getting screened for #cancer regularly is the best way to find it early — before you have any symptoms and when treatment is likely to work best.

Did you know, the recommended age for mammogram screenings for average-risk women has been lowered to 45 from 50?

Ask your doctor about the right screenings for you.
