☀️ Summer Health Series ☀️ – Bike Helmets
☀️ Summer Health Series ☀️
Wearing a bike helmet can lower the risk of head injury by 40% and the risk of serious head injury by 60%. Before going for a family ride, ensure children are wearing a helmet.
How to check if a helmet fits correctly:
✔️ the straps form a “V” below and in front of the earlobes
✔️ the front edge of the helmet sits one to two fingers above the eyebrows
✔️ the space between the chin and chinstrap is one finger-width

☀️ Summer Health Series ☀️ – Bug Bites
☀️ Summer Health Series ☀️
During the summer months, we’re all spending more time outdoors – whether it’s in our own backyards, public parks or hiking trails.
Afterward, you may notice you have #bugbites. 🦟 They might be red, itchy, sore and could have some swelling.
Most bites and stings will heal on their own, but here are some tips to help relieve the irritation:
– avoid scratching the area, placing a bandage to the area can help
– use an anti-itch lotion on the bite
– place a cold compress on the bite to alleviate the itching
– try a non-prescription medicine to relieve itching, redness and swelling
Call your family doctor 👩⚕️ or 811 if you have any of the following symptoms:
– new symptoms or they become more severe or frequent
– signs of a skin infection
– flu symptoms, such as a fever, muscle aches or chills
You can find additional tips, a symptom tracker and more at My Health Alberta’s bug bite page: https://bit.ly/3IhpEev

☀️ Summer Health Series ☀️ – Dehydration
During our #SummerHealthSeries we’ll be providing health tips on all your summer health questions.
Our first summer health tip is on dehydration.
It’s important to stay hydrated during the summer months.
When the weather is hot and we’re spending more time outdoors, we’re at risk of becoming dehydrated more quickly.
Symptoms of dehydration include:
➡️ Fatigue
➡️ Headache
➡️ Thirst
➡️ Dizziness
➡️ Fainting
➡️ Confusion
A good rule of thumb is to drink eight ounces of water every 20 minutes or so when you’re working or exercising in the heat.
By taking this simple precaution, you can help ensure you stay healthy and safe all summer long.
